“Sideways Glances”
Artist: Roxy Erickson
My work is a direct reflection of my experiences, both positive and negative, and a desire to create a shared emotional experience with my audience. The esthetic – flashy, florescent, over the top— is meant to incite a false sense of joy that is quickly overshadowed by a subtle melancholia. The viewer is lured by the glitzy esthetic, but left with an unsettling feeling. Whether it’s working with society gendered, feminine materials or the fact that I primarily make portraits of the women in my life, being a woman impacts all aspects of my work. It is also extremely important to me to join the current cultural conversation and provide my own commentary on women’s rights and our place in the world.
