“Sideways Glances”
My work is a direct reflection of my experiences, both positive and negative, and a desire to create a shared emotional experience with my audience. The esthetic – flashy, florescent, over the top— is meant to incite a false sense of joy that is quickly overshadowed by a subtle melancholia. The viewer is lured by the glitzy esthetic, but left with an unsettling feeling. Whether it’s working with society gendered, feminine materials or the fact that I primarily make portraits of the women in my life, being a woman impacts all aspects of my work. Angie Gomez has found purpose in creating art. Creating gives a sense of wonder and deep joy that nothing else has. Her journey as an artist began when she was very young, watching her grandmother paint in her tiny kitchen. She gave her a small canvas and showed her how to paint a rabbit, and from that point she pursued art with all her heart. Angie was raised in Arkansas among preachers, farmers, quilters and strong women. She believes, in art, as in life, we make our own way.
